A reader near St. Petersburg, Florida sent in this incredible photo of a pair of Sandhill Cranes that hang around her neighborhood.
According to Wikipedia, Sandhill cranes are not considered threatened as a species – but there are subspecies that are very rare. Only 5,000 Florida Sandhill Cranes are left! The Florida Sandhill Crane is under state and federal protection.
The photographer says she has often seen three cranes together in her neighborhood, but she spotted this pair at the height of mating season. “I happened to look out the window and saw the two of them literally walking up the street, so I grabbed my camera and ran outside.” She says she was able to get pretty close to the cranes, and zoomed in to get the close up shown here.
I imagine one crane singing that old Huey Lewis song to the other …
